Chapter Eleven
I gaped at the scene in the foyer of Eloise Worthingtonâs house. A baseball bat lay next to Eloiseâs body and shards of broken glass covered the floor. It looked like sheâd tried to throw everything within reach at her attacker. I even noticed pieces of kibble mixed in with the shards. Even amidst the chaos, I couldnât help but notice Eloiseâs appearance.
âWhy is she wearing a hot dog costume?â I asked.
âShe was known for it,â Sean said. âI didnât actually realize it was the same woman until I got here.â
I studied the hot dog on the floor. A yellow line of mustard ran up her middle. âShe was known for dressing like a hot dog?â
âSheâd wear it in front of businesses to protest stuff like poor customer service.â Sean shook his head. âI got called to the bank once to cite her for harassment.â
âWell, I have to agree with her there. The bankâs customer service is terrible.â
Sean looked at me. âShe was protesting the fact that theyâd run out of grape lollipops and could only offer orange.â
I stuffed my hands into my pockets and observed the dead woman. âOrange is the devilâs work.â
âYou two wouldâve been a nightmare together.â
I ignored him. âAre you sure it was the snake that killed her?â
He pointed to her arm. âPuncture wounds equals snake bite. Poisonous too.â
âYou mean venomous.â
âSame thing,â he said dismissively.
âNo, it isnât.â
âWhatever, Professor Fury,â he scoffed. âI have a degree too, you know.â
âIn massive douchebaggery?â
He glowered at me.
âOh, that was your minor. Got it.â I shifted my focus back to Eloise. âHow did you even know to come here?â
âShe called to say sheâd seen the snake and asked me to come,â he said. âI guess I wasnât fast enough.â He shifted a few shards of glass with the front of his shoe.
âWhat ever happened to Animal Control?â I asked.
He shrugged. âThey havenât had any luck finding it. Seems smart for a snake.â
I crouched down for a closer look at the puncture wound. Sean didnât realize that more than a snake could cause a mark like that. There was no evidence of blood and Eloise seemed to have retained hers, so a vampire was unlikely.
I returned to a standing position. âWhereâs the cat? Mischief?â
Sean shrugged. âWho cares? We have a dead woman in front of us.â
I gasped. âWho cares? Thereâs a killer snake on the loose and that cat is the right size for a snack.â
He observed me. âWhy is the catâs fate more pressing than the womanâs?â
âFor starters, the cat is still alive.â I hoped. If Mischief was anything like Grandmaâs cat Candy, then she could handle herself, so maybe the cat would be okay. Then again, Eloise had a baseball bat and still ended up dead on the foyer floor. It mustâve been a sneaky snake attack. âIs there any other evidence? How did the snake get in?â It wasnât as though Eloise wouldâve invited the creature inside for tea and biscuits.
âI havenât noticed an entry point.â Sean paled, making his freckles even more prominent.
